Freed from jail, Greensburg man lands in more trouble
Saturday, June 28, 2008

A Greensburg man who was out of jail on bond was arrested early yesterday on charges that he attacked his former girlfriend and her new boyfriend in Hempfield.

Curtis Scharer IV, 34, was free while awaiting trial when, around 5 a.m. yesterday, he went to the Zeller Street residence where his ex-girlfriend had been.

State police said Mr. Scharer cut utility lines at the home, flattened the tires of a car parked outside and punched the woman's new boyfriend when the couple went outside to investigate.

After the assault on Eugene Irvin, 52, Mr. Scharer forced the woman into a wooded area where he physically and sexually assaulted her, police said.

The suspect had been released from the Westmoreland County Prison on June 20, where he had been held until he waived his right to a preliminary hearing on charges of aggravated assault, simple assault and harassment. Those charges stem from an incident June 14.
