Big 33 Football Classic: WPIAL stars shine bright in 31-16 win
Pennsylvania's fast start puts Ohio in hole

HERSHEY, Pa. -- The 51st Big 33 Football Classic might as well have been the 2008 WPIAL Football Classic.

WPIAL athletes played some of the most prominent roles in Pennsylvania's easy, 31-16 victory against Ohio last night at Hersheypark Stadium.

And the most prominent were Pittsburgh Central Catholic quarterback Tino Sunseri and Aliquippa wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin, both Pitt recruits.

Sunseri threw two first-quarter touchdown passes, including a 10-yard lob to Baldwin to open the scoring, propelling Pennsylvania to its third consecutive win. Pennsylvania leads the overall series with Ohio, 12-9.

Sunseri, who completed only 5 of 11 passes, added a 79-yard scoring pass in the fourth quarter to Gateway's Cameron Saddler

"I have to credit to the offensive line and my receivers," Sunseri said. "The wide receivers ran really good routes."

Sunseri was being modest. His touchdown pass to Baldwin was a work of art, hitting the Aliquippa product perfectly in stride. Likewise, his pass to Saddler was right on the money.

Sunseri and Baldwin hooked up on Pennsylvania's first offensive play, a 37-yard strike.

That play, combined with Sunseri's 11-yard out pattern to Norwin's Mike Shanahan, set up Sunseri's throw to Baldwin in the deep left corner of the end zone for the first score three minutes into the game.

On Ohio's third series, the visitors marched to the Pennsylvania 21 before running out of steam. A 38-yard field-goal attempt by Ben Buchanan was blocked by Central Catholic's Andrew Taglianetti.

On Pennsylvania's third series, Sunseri, not known as a great running threat, reeled off a 50-yard run that appeared to be a sure touchdown before Ohio's Kenny Veal knocked Sunseri out of bounds inches from the goal line.

On the next play, Pennsylvania's other quarterback, John Laub of Parkland, sneaked in, but a procedure penalty negated the score. The trouble was no one seemed to know it. The Pennsylvania team was on the field for the extra point and milled around for a few minutes before the ball was moved back

No matter. Sunseri came back in and flipped a 5-yard touchdown pass to Saddler with 52 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.

"We got in," Sunseri said. "That's all that mattered."

A late first-quarter fumble by Ohio's Michael Zordich, a Penn State recruit, was recovered by North Allegheny's Corey Watts at Ohio's 23. That set up a 39-yard field goal by David Soldner 53 seconds into the second quarter.

Pennsylvania added its third touchdown late in the second quarter.

Harrisburg's Adrian Robinson blocked a punt that Ohio recovered at its own 3. That set up a loss of possession on downs and gave Pennsylvania the ball at the 3. On the next play, Mike Jones of Harrisburg Bishop McDevitt scored and David Soldner's kick made it 24-0.

Ohio scored in the third quarter off a Pennsylvania turnover. Laub's short pass was tipped and intercepted by Ohio's Steve Gardiner at the Pennsylvania 47. Nine plays later, Michael Shaw broke the shutout, catching a 7-yard touchdown pass from Zac Dysert.

Saddler's second scoring reception was much more exciting. He beat Ohio's Lamar McQueen deep, pulled in a sidearm throw from Sunseri, and broke away from McQueen to complete the 79-yard score with 9:08 to play in the game.
