Quick Getaway to Nine Mile Run
Friday, June 13, 2008

Where: Lower Frick Park in Regent Square area.

How far: Six miles from Downtown.

How much: Free.

What to do: A polluted mess just a few years ago, Nine Mile Run's above-ground stream in Frick Park has been cleaned up and restored with trails and elevated boardwalk bordered by bucolic fields of wildflowers and cattails. Completed in June 2006, it's the largest urban stream restoration conducted by the Army Corps of Engineers in this country. Great spot for cycling, running and walking. Big parking lot nearby. The project will be celebrated 7 to 11 p.m. June 21 in a fund-raiser, "A Midsummer Night's Stream," in Frick Park with a special performance by Attack Theatre ($60 for tickets). For details on this event and the watershed go to www.ninemilerun.org.

Fun Factor: 9, especially on a clear, crisp morning. Don't miss the hawks and other wildlife.
