Fake the cake ... flower fresh!

Looks good enough to eat ...

Although it certainly looks good enough to eat, this colorful confection is made entirely of fresh flowers, carnations to be exact. Centerpieces like it will bring flower power to next Saturday's 25th birthday party at the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh, North Side. Jim Ebbert of Flowershow is creating 50 cakes in different colors and sizes for the gala.

"They were looking for a fun theme for the party, and Nancy Byrnes [of Nancy Byrnes Events] came to me with the idea to do cakes," says Mr. Ebbert. "I didn't really know how many flowers it would take, and we don't normally carry carnations. But they're a perfect flower, round and durable and vivid in color. Roses would certainly work, but you'd probably need about six dozen!"

The flower cakes are also available for weddings, showers and other occasions by special order through Flowershow in Oxford Centre, Downtown. Prices begin at $45.

For tickets to the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh Birthday 25 Gala, call 412-322-5058, ext. 217. Flowershow can be reached at 412-261-2844.
