In the Wings: 'Two Trains' extension confirmed
Thursday, June 05, 2008

• It took a while to get everyone on the same page, but all lights are now go for a one-week extension of Pittsburgh Playwrights' very fine version of August Wilson's "Two Trains Running." Only Eugene Lee, who played a crisply authoritative Mr. West, had to return for previously scheduled acting work, but Les Howard will take on his role. Continuing are Anthony Chisholm, Jonathan Berry, Sala Udin, Wali Jamal, Sharnece Thomas and Lonzo Green. Performances are Fri. 8 p.m., Sat. 2 and 8 p.m., Sun. 2 and 7 p.m.; $22.50-$27.50; 412-288-0358 or www.pghplaywrights.com.

• Last weekend, "Two Trains" had special visitors from Seattle: Wilson's widow, Constanza Romero, and their daughter, Azula, 10.

A loss to learning

Don Adam, who taught English literature at Chatham College, 1966-2002, died two months ago. He was a learned lover of theater who led regular theater trips to London and the Shaw Festival, and it was always stimulating to argue a theater point with him or reminisce about favorite productions we'd seen. (You can read much more in Anya Sostek's April 6 obituary.) Fellow theater lover Ron Necheff writes that Don's "acute enthusiasm for the arts [particularly modern British theater, Shaw and his contemporaries] could be quite contagious. He loved and supported the Three Rivers Shakespeare Fest and PICT." Don's life will be celebrated in a memorial service at 3 p.m. Saturday at Welker Hall on the Chatham campus.

Neat Tricks Dept.

• I've already said I look forward to seeing "Shear Madness" again in hopes that others in the cast will be voted the murderer. But get this: CLO does it with one understudy, Jennifer Veltre Smith, who cannot, of course, cover all the roles, old and young, male and female. So if someone's out, she goes into one of her appropriate roles and everyone moves around accordingly. I'd like to see that, too.

• By the way, the authentic old barber's chair in the show belonged to the late John Berkebile, who ran a barbershop with his brother and father in Koppel, near Beaver Falls. His daughter, Saundra Diana, says it was his chair since he started cutting hair at age 17 in 1961.

Sewickley to Scotland

• Sewickley Academy has been chosen to participate in the 2009 American High School Theatre Festival that runs in conjunction with the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Some 25 students will travel to Edinburgh for two weeks next summer, responsible for every aspect of the production, from selling tickets to lighting, performing, load in and strike. Theater director Stacy Donovan will go get the lay of the land this August.

Welcome home

• There are two Pittsburghers in the "Color Purple" cast, Virginia Ann Woodruff (Church Lady Darlene) and Adam Wade (Ol' Mister). Woodruff went to Conroy Elementary, Allegheny High School and Point Park. Her Broadway credits include "Color Purple," "All Shook Up" and "Smokey Joe's Cafe." Wade, the first African-American to host a game show (CBS's "Musical Chairs"), has done lots and lots of TV and theater.

Shaw Stratford festivals

• Enrollment is open for the PG's 2008 Shaw and Stratford Festival tour, July 9-13, including up to seven varied shows, from musicals to drama. For info, call Jackie or Candi at Gulliver's Travels, 412-441-3131.
