Random musings

Just a few random thoughts from Colin Dunlap on this glorious Wednesday afternoon:

• Got to see West Allegheny righthanded pitcher Zak Sinclair last night in his team's WPIAL Class AAA victory against Trinity. In short, Sinclair was dominant and, when he heads to North Carolina State next year, look for him to get even better as he'll work to develop his off-speed stuff and have better command of it. This is just a hunch, but he's a guy who, when he becomes draft eligible after a few years of college, could get drafted in the top 15 rounds.

This story about sportsmanship has been making the rounds, pretty touching stuff.

• This past weekend, when I was in Shippensburg for the PIAA track and field championships, I was witness to the true end of an era. For 30 years, announcer Don DeNardo's distinctive and authoritative voice boomed through the public address system at the championships. But Saturday served as the last time anyone will hear the Erie native's signature, "Double-A boys', Triple-A boys' fiiirst calllllll!" jolt through the speakers. DeNardo, 80, worked his final meet before retiring. Anyone who has ever been to the track championships and has heard DeNardo's voice understands just how much he meant to the event.

• Now, the ball is in Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer's court on this one, as one of his prized recruits was recently arrested for dealing drugs. I like how Beamer was conveniently "out of the office" the day the newspaper called for a comment but the secretary knew that he "likely would not have any comment on the situation."
