Help for Mark Smith

The Peters Township Federation of Teachers is joining forces to help raise funds for a former student who was volunteering with AmeriCorps and had spent nearly a year helping Katrina flood victims in New Orleans.

Mark Smith, 23, was shot several times in the stomach and left arm March 27 after he and another volunteer in New Orleans tried to stop a car theft.

He underwent three surgeries to repair liver and lung damage before being discharged. His parents, Ray and Marianne, who had flown to New Orleans the day after the shooting, brought him home in a rented van that was outfitted with an air mattress.

The teachers union sponsored a car wash yesterday and is accepting donations at Community Bank, 4139 Washington Road, McMurray, PA. 15317

Donations should be marked attention: "Marks Fund."
