Students will have the day off Tuesday because of an in-service day for faculty and staff that will feature a daylong program of information and activities to improve physical fitness.
The program will begin at 8 a.m. with a healthy breakfast followed at 9 a.m. by a keynote address by Leslie Bonci from UPMC. Throughout the day, the faculty and staff will choose among activities such as a "How to Stay Young the First 100 Years" workshop, ballroom dancing, body combat (a form of kickboxing), body jam (aerobic-style hip-hop), body restoration, healthy entertaining and stretching your way to health.
There will also be Pilates, pingpong, relaxation, salsa dancing, step aerobics, stress management, a "Truths and Myths about Chiropractic Care" presentation, volleyball, walking, an "Important Information You Won't Hear from Your Medical Doctor" workshop, a weight-training workout and yoga.
The Canon-McMillan nursing staff will do body fat percent testing, and the Stroke Institute will check pulse and heart rates.
There also will be body mass index, blood pressure, bone density, spinal, anti-oxidant and sun damage screenings.
Various health-related practitioners and businesses also will provide information.
A benefit concert will feature the high school jazz band and the alumni of the Dave Pew Jazz Band at 7 p.m. Saturday in the high school auditorium.
Tickets are $10.
Proceeds will benefit the Dave Pew Memorial Scholarship Fund, which was initiated by former students of music teacher Dave Pew to provide educational scholarships to graduating seniors pursuing a career in music.
Before teaching, Mr. Pew played all over the country with several big bands and was selected to play lead trumpet in the San Francisco Air Force Band. After his tour of duty, he studied music at Duquesne University and upon graduation began his teaching career at Peters.
