Reality TV: Full-figured 'Top Model'
Friday, May 16, 2008

The finale of UPN's "America's Next Top Model" is historic by reality TV standards: For the first time in 10 cycles, a full-figured woman is crowned the winner.

Congratulations to Whitney Thompson, 20, of Atlantic Beach, Fla., who at a size 12 beat 13 much thinner girls to win a contract with Elite Model Management, the cover and a six-page spread in Seventeen magazine and a $100,000 Cover Girl contract.

It's about time a beautiful girl with some booty wins the competition.

"I do feel good about myself and I want other women in America to feel good about themselves," Whitney says. Runner-up Anya Kop deserves a mention, too. The energetic, high-fashion Hawaiian won several competitions throughout the season and always maintained an upbeat attitude in a house of catty models.

It'll be a battle of the Davids on the season seven finale of "American Idol." After 56 million votes, Syesha Mercado is eliminated this week. While it's not shocking, I was hoping for an upset. Simon Cowell's right, it'll be "a real humdinger" of a finale next week. While he wasn't always my favorite, I'm pulling for the emotional rocker David Cook. Sure, gooey David Archuleta's adorable, but Cook has the maturity and style to win it.

The "Idol" finale airs Tuesday and Wednesday at 8 p.m. on Fox.

Channel surfing

Lovable Marissa Jaret Winokur doesn't survive semifinals week on "Dancing with the Stars." The Tony Award-winning actress earns a pair of 26s for her quickstep and rhumba, but the fan favorite who's been outspoken about not being a size 2 seems elated she made it this far. Upon her departure she offers these uplifting words: "I want everyone to just go out and do something fun. Do something that makes you feel sexy and shake what your mama gave you!"

Next week is the finale, and I'm rooting for footballer Jason Taylor, but injured actor Cristian de la Fuente impresses me more each week. My gut says gold medal ice skater Kristi Yamaguchi will take home the disco ball trophy, but I find her routines boring.

The "Dancing" finale airs Monday and Tuesday at 8 p.m. on ABC.

On the season finale of CBS' "Survivor: Micronesia," Amanda wins the final two Immunity Challenges and takes Parvati to the finals, but once again, "China" contestant Amanda can't win the $1 million. Flirty Parvati takes the vote, 5 to 3, over her friend. At least Amanda found love with Ozzy. James wins the fan-favorite vote again, winning $100,000. Also Jonny Fairplay's now the happy father to baby girl, Piper, with "Top Model" contestant Michelle Deighton. It's cute, but I like crazy Fairplay much better. Season 17 of "Survivor," which will head to Gabon, will be shot in HD.

On the season finale of MTV's "The Hills," Lo is driving a wedge between her two roomies. Lauren confronts Audrina, who says, "Everything was fine when it was just me and you living together," driving a torn Lauren to tears. The scene is so sad, it's like watching a bad breakup. Meanwhile, Spencer cranks up the psycho meter when he follows his ex, Heidi, on her business trip to Las Vegas. His stalker behavior is creepy, but stupid Heidi ditches her new, rockin' Vegas gig to go back to L.A. with Spen. What a dope - she deserves him! Scenes from season four already prove Heidi's back on Spencer's crazy train again anyway.

Crybaby of the Week

... is Chelsea on "The Bachelor: London Calling." I give Chelsea a lot of credit for not bursting into tears when Matt dumps her in Barbados, but her comments about winner Shayne are uncalled for. Bitter Chelsea says L.A. actress Shayne is the fakest single girl on the show, and Matt boldly sticks up for his love, saying Chelsea must not really know him then. But in a happy ending, Matt proposes to the 22-year-old blond beauty (Lorenzo Lamas' daughter). Shayne says yes, but on one condition - that he never looks at another woman because he's seen way too many during the course of their TV romance!
