The summer concert season took on a whole new complexion with the announcement, out of nowhere, of the New American Music Union festival.

It will take place in a parking lot at the SouthSide Works with Bob Dylan, Gnarls Barkley, The Raconteurs, The Roots, Spoon, the Black Keys, Black Mountain and more -- the kind of lineup that rivals Bumbershoot in Seattle.

As for the rest of the summer, Jimmy Buffett, Steve Miller, Dave Matthews, Kenny Chesney ... they're all present and accounted for.

But there are a few twists:

• Ozzfest is out of the picture, seemingly replaced by the Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival with Slipknot, Disturbed and a cast of gruesome thousands.

• The Police, who bypassed Pittsburgh last summer, make up for it with no less than Elvis Costello in tow.

On the downside, we took that big white tent at Station Square a little for granted. With no action on the proposed Sandcastle venue, this will be the second summer in Pittsburgh without a mid-sized outdoor venue, so a few shows will slip away.

The Three Rivers Arts Festival and the county parks series pick up some of the slack. Those listings can be found in the plentiful free concert section.
