Simon Baker, more comedies on CBS fall schedule
Thursday, May 15, 2008
Simon Baker and Robin Tunney star in "The Mentalist," about a detective known for solving crimes with his razor-sharp skills of observation. It premieres this fall on CBS.

CBS will be in business with Simon Baker for a third time on Tuesday nights this fall with a new series called "The Mentalist."

Baker previously starred in the Pittsburgh-set drama "The Guardian" and filmed the pilot of the short-lived CBS heist drama "Smith" here two years ago. Both of those shows also aired in Tuesday time slots. So far, there's no Pittsburgh connection for Simon on this new series, which is set in California.

Although bubble shows "The Unit" and "The New Adventures of Old Christine" will be back, "Shark" and vampire drama "Moonlight" were sent into the harsh glare of cancellation. (DeadlineHollywoodDaily.com reported Tuesday there's a slim chance "Moonlight" could be picked up for The CW's outsourced Sunday night schedule, but at a press breakfast yesterday, CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler downplayed that possibility, according to TV Week.)

Other canceled series include "Cane," "Jericho," "Kid Nation," "Power of 10," "Viva Laughlin" and "Welcome to the Captain."

Tassler said it was unlikely that CBS will pick up Fox's canceled Pittsburgh-set sitcom "Back to You," which probably ensures the show's demise, as CBS was the most likely home for the series.

CBS will open another night of comedy on Wednesday at 8 p.m., led by the return of "New Adventures of Old Christine," a bubble show that nonetheless earned a full-season, 22-episode order.

Sitcom "Rules of Engagement" will return at midseason and CBS ordered two editions of "The Amazing Race" for the 2008-09 TV season.

Here's CBS's fall schedule, with new series in bold:

Sunday

7 p.m.: "60 Minutes."

8 p.m.: "The Amazing Race."

9 p.m.: "Cold Case."

10 p.m.: "The Unit."

Monday

8 p.m.: "How I Met Your Mother."

8:30 p.m.: "Big Bang Theory."

9 p.m.: "Two and a Half Men."

9:30 p.m.: "Worst Week" -- A magazine editor (Kyle Bornheimer) will do anything to please the parents of his girlfriend (Erinn Hayes, "The Winner"), but disaster follows whenever he visits their house. So he's really not looking forward to telling his future in-laws (Kurtwood Smith, "That '70s Show;" Nancy Lenehan, "Married to the Kellys") that their daughter is pregnant.

10 p.m.: "CSI Miami."

Tuesday

8 p.m.: "NCIS."

9 p.m.: "The Mentalist" -- A semi-celebrity psychic (Simon Baker) with no real paranormal abilities uses his observation skills to help the California Bureau of Investigation solve crimes. (Sounds like a humorless version of "Psych.") His loose-cannon theatrics rankle co-workers, including a no-nonsense senior agent (Robin Tunney, "Prison Break").

10 p.m.: "Without a Trace."

Wednesday

8 p.m.: "The New Adventures of Old Christine."

8:30 p.m.: "Project Gary" -- A recently divorced painting contractor (Jay Mohr, "Ghost Whisperer") and his controlling ex-wife (Paula Marshall, "The Hills") spar while trying to raise their children. Oh, yeah, it's a comedy.

9 p.m.: "Criminal Minds."

10 p.m.: "CSI: NY."

Thursday

8 p.m.: "Survivor."

9 p.m.: "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation."

10 p.m.: "Eleventh Hour" -- Based on a British series, this drama follows biophysicist Jacob Hood (Rufus Sewell, "The Illusionist") as he parachutes in at the last minute to investigate scientific crises.

Friday

8 p.m.: "Ghost Whisperer."

9 p.m.: "The Ex List" -- A psychic tells a single, thirtysomething woman (Elizabeth Reaser, "Grey's Anatomy") that she's already dated her future husband and if she doesn't find him again in the next year she'll remain alone forever.

10 p.m.: "NUMB3RS."

Saturday

8 p.m.: "Crimetime Saturday."

9 p.m.: "Crimetime Saturday."

10 p.m.: "48 Hours: Mystery."

Midseason

CBS announced just one new mid-season series, "Harper's Island," a murder-mystery about friends and family who attend a wedding on a small island off the coast of Seattle.
