ABC touts stability in new fall schedule
Wednesday, May 14, 2008
"Life on Mars," starring Jason O'Mara, will premiere on ABC in the fall.

ABC will add just two new shows to its fall schedule -- one drama, one reality -- while handing pink slips to "October Road" and "Women's Murder Club."

Fantastical midseason drama "Eli Stone" won a renewal, as did "Boston Legal," which was also on the verge of cancellation. ABC Entertainment president Steven McPherson said it will be the fifth and final season for "Boston Legal," which has a 13-episode order.

As expected, ABC also picked up NBC castoff "Scrubs" for 18 episodes.

"Very simply, this is an incredibly stable schedule," McPherson said, owing to the network's momentum last fall before the writers' strike hit.

Due to the strike, ABC made fewer pilot episodes of prospective series than in the past, but the network will continue to develop more than a dozen pilots that could be ordered to series later in the 2008-09 TV season.

"The reality is, that's when a lot of our opening and opportunity will come up," McPherson said, noting that while some networks are curtailing pilot production, he remains a staunch believer in research and development. "We don't feel like picking up things until they're fully developed in the pilot [stage]."

In addition to "Road" and "Murder Club," other canceled ABC series include "Big Shots," "Carpoolers," "Cashmere Mafia," "Cavemen," "Dance War," "Here Come the Newlyweds," "Men in Trees," "MissGuided," "Notes From the Underbelly" and "Oprah's Big Give."

McPherson would have ordered another edition of "Oprah's Big Give," but he said executive producer Oprah Winfrey wasn't interested in continuing the show.

Here's ABC's fall schedule, with new series in bold:

Midseason

"Scrubs" will air at midseason -- anytime between November and March -- along with new seasons of "Lost," "According to Jim," "The Bachelor" and "Primetime: What Would You Do?"

New midseason series include:

"The Goode Family" -- "King of the Hill" creator Mike Judge returns to TV with this new animated comedy about a family whose efforts to do the "right" thing often have unintended consequences.

"Untitled Ashton Kutcher/Tyra Banks Project" -- ABC released little information about this one from executive producers Kutcher and Banks, other than to say it will be "a beauty pageant unlike any you've ever seen."
