Five members of a Mercer County Amish family traveling by buggy were injured last night when an out-of-control car smashed into them.
The injured included four children under the age of six.
According to state police, a Toyota pickup driven by Jennifer J. Crenshaw, 38, of Geneva, Ohio was traveling east on State Road 358 when she crossed into the opposite lane and hit a utility pole.
The pickup then rolled once and struck the buggy about 6:50 p.m.
Police said she was legally drunk.
Everyone in the buggy was ejected.
Benjamin Kempf, 29, of Clarks Mill, Mercer County, suffered major injuries, police said, as did 1-year-old Miriam Kempf and 5-year-old Erma Kempf.
Two boys, David Kempf, 6, and Melvin Kempf, 4, suffered moderate injuries.
Two of the injured were taken via helicopter to St. Elzabeth's Medical Center in Youngstown, Ohio. The other three injured were taken to UPMC Greenville and later transferred to Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh.
Ms. Crenshaw was treated and released at UPMC Greenville.
She is charged with DUI and five counts of aggravated assault while DUI, as well as numerous other traffic offenses.
