SATURDAY'S ASSAULT IN THE NHL BROUGH TO YOU BY DALLAS
While it wasn't quite Marty McSorley on Donald Brashear, Mike Ribeiro's two-handed chop on Red Wings goaltender Chris Osgood deserves a suspension. It doesn't matter if Osgood sold it a little. It doesn't matter if Osgood wasn't seriously injured. It doesn't matter if Osgood caught Ribeiro with the butt-end of his stick, accidently or intentionally. YOU CAN NOT SWING YOUR STICK AT ANOTHER PLAYER. That's might be the most dangerous thing you can do on a hockey rink.
And Ribeiro doesn't deserve one of those itsy-bitsy one-game suspensions Anaheim Chris Pronger received in last season's playoff for his blows to heads of opposing players. It shouldn't matter if this is the playoffs. He should face a minimum of ten games.
If Osgood intentionally butt-ended Ribeiro (he claimed it was an accident), suspend him. But his alleged offense isn't as clear-cut as Ribeiro's.
Osgood made 17 saves in Detroit's 2-1 win. The Red Wings lead the series, 2-0.
