The weather for the World of Outlaws Sprint Car schedule has been frightful.
With the WoO steaming toward Lernerville Speedway for the Commonwealth Clash Tuesday, the tour looks to rebound after losing eight of 15 races on the 2008 schedule because of weather.
While all the WoO teams have to deal with it, two-time and defending WoO Champion Donny Schatz knows better times are ahead.
"The weather has been tough on everybody. When you have all this time to think, you end up out-thinking yourself," Schatz said. "We love it when we're racing three and four times a week. But when it's once every couple of weeks you just end up over-analyzing everything. I know once we get going and get a dozen races in, we'll be where we want to."
That could explain why Schatz has only one win, which came at Knoxville last week. He has five wins in his past seven starts at Knoxville, Tenn., which would seem to indicate that his new team owned by Tony Stewart is beginning to jell.
"Winning on Saturday night was a huge deal for all of us," Schatz said. "I came to Tony Stewart Racing to continue winning and performing at the highest level. From top to bottom, this is a first-class team and now that we've got that first one out of the way we can't wait to go get the next one."
Based on history, Lernerville would seem a good spot for No. 2.
With his own team, Schatz competed in 22 WoO events at Lernerville, picking up three wins. Two were back-to-back, big-money Don Martin Memorials.
"Lernerville always has a great surface for us to race on," he said. "There's not a track out there quite like it. It's a big year for the track and we want to be greedy and win both times we are there."
Going into this weekend, Craig Dollansky (3 wins) has a slim points lead over Jason Meyers (2) and Schatz (1) atop the World of Outlaws standings. Former WoO Champion Danny "The Dude" Lasoski has one victory and is 13th while Aliquippa's Tim Shafer sits 11th with two top-five finishes in eight races.
Pittsburgh Raceway Park, the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) sanctioned drag racing facility, has announced the postponement of the May 2009, Nitro Jam event.
Current economic conditions, rising fuel prices and the election year have been cited as reasons for the joint decision by track ownership and IHRA leadership to push back the first-time event.
