Traveling to Spain in a few weeks? Consider yourself a foodie?
You might be interested in a once-in-a-lifetime culinary opportunity for auction, benefiting charity, on eBay: A reservation for two for the night of May 23 at El Bulli, in Roses, Spain, about two and a half hours north of Barcelona.
The successful bidder is responsible for his or her own transportation, accommodations and the cost of dinner.
What gives a mere reservation value?
While it is a matter of debate whether El Bulli is the best restaurant in the world, it almost certainly wins the prize for toughest reservation.
The restaurant is open only six months of the year, and every year hundreds of thousands of reservation attempts are made for only a few thousand seatings.
It is booked for all of this year.
Staci Rosenberg, a resident of New Orleans, has been trying to make a reservation for six years.
This year her hard work paid off, and she was able to book a table for four.
She and her mother, Janice Rosenberg, a Pittsburgh travel agent, are making the culinary pilgrimage, but rather than waste the two other seats, they decided to donate them to charity and selected Covenant House in New Orleans.
It provides homeless youth with food, shelter, clothing, medical care, educational programs, drug abuse treatment and other services. It also operates Covenant Cafe, which offers vocational food service training to at-risk youth.
The highest bid was $212.50 as of yesterday afternoon.
The auction ends at 1:17 p.m. Monday.
