WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Pirates will have starter Tom Gorzelanny skip a turn in the rotation because of the strained lower back that prompted him to exit early from his outing Wednesday in New York.
He had been scheduled to pitch Tuesday and but now won't pitch until next Saturday at home against the Atlanta Braves.
"If he had to pitch Tuesday, he could," manager John Russell said this morning. "We just want to make sure this isn't something that lingers for months, so we'll give him a few extra days to feel better and to get some work on the side."
The back flare-up was Gorzelanny's second this season, the other coming April 13.
Also, shortstop Jack Wilson will not begin his rehabilitation stint today at Class AA Altoona, as had been expected, because of the setback yesterday with his strained left calf. He felt a tweak while playing defense in the second inning of an extended spring game in Fort Myers, Fla.
Russell said Wilson felt better upon returning to Bradenton, though. Still, Wilson will not rejoin the Pirates Tuesday, as they had hoped. They want him to get at least two or three games in the minors, meaning the target now is next weekend.
