Downtown living tour

Here's your chance to get a peek at some of Downtown's newest condos and apartments and samples from some of its top restaurants. The Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership's will hold its fifth annual Walk and Dine Downtown living tour from 5:30 to 11 p.m. May 21.

In addition to guided tours of 151 First Side, The Carlyle, Piatt Place, 941 Penn and the Heinz Lofts, attendees will taste treats from Palomino, Nine on Nine, Sonoma Grill and others.

Tickets are $60 each and sell out fast, as do tickets for the exclusive VIP tour for $150. Buses transport guests from the opening reception at One Oxford Centre to the various stops.

Plant sales

The McIntyre Garden Club will hold its annual plant and bake sale on May 10 from 8 to 11:30 a.m. at the McIntyre Elementary School Portico, 200 McIntyre Road, Ross. Annuals, perennials and hanging baskets will be available along with baked goods. Proceeds benefit community service projects.

The Squaw Run Garden Club will hold its annual May plant sale on May 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Squaw Valley Park gazebo. Perennials, herbs, hanging baskets and planters will be for sale. Proceeds benefit local gardening projects.

Pittsburgh garden swap

The eighth annual Pittsburgh Garden Swap will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 31 at the Frick Environmental Center in Frick Park, Squirrel Hill. Admission is $3 per person.

The theme of this year's swap is "Bring Your Ten Best." Participants should bring 10 desirable, healthy, well-potted and clearly labeled plants to share. Other activities are planned. For a complete schedule, go to pittsburghgardenswap.blogspot.com.

Composting, worm workshops

The Pennsylvania Resources Council will hold back yard composting classes and a worm composting workshop in June and August.

The composting classes will cover setting up a compost pile, proper maintenance and ways of using finished compost.

Participants will receive an Earth Machine Compost Bin with attendance.

Compost classes, which cost $40 per single; $50 for couples (one bin per family), will be held:

  • June 21: 11 a.m., Homewood Gardens, Squirrel Hill. 11 a.m.
  • June 24: 6 p.m., WYEP Community Broadcast Center, South Side.
  • Aug. 9: 11 a.m., Boyd Community Center, O'Hara.

The worm composting class will include a bin and red wiggler worms. Fee is $45 single; $55 for couples.

It's scheduled for 11 a.m. June 28 at Boyd Community Center, O'Hara.
