DISTRICT

Anglers are reminded that walleye season begins at 12:01 a.m. tomorrow.

Lake Erie: Crappies were hitting in the marina bay, Long Pond and Horseshoe Pond. Northern pike have moved into the stink hole, Misery Bay and the head of the bay. Pike are plentiful this year. One angler landed a 40-inch pike on a Rapala in Misery Bay Wednesday. Anglers were picking up nice numbers of largemouth bass up to 19 inches, and a couple of smallmouths, in the bay. Perch were coming off the North Pier. Anglers were catching walleye limits out of Port Clinton, Ohio, last weekend.

Tionesta Creek/Tionesta Reservoir (Forest County): The creek was fishing well for trout from Barnes to the Nebraska Bridge. The outflow from the dam typically yields trout even as water warms. Crappie fishing in the lake is expected to turn on soon.

Kahle Lake (Clarion County): The bass bite picked up with last week's spate of warm weather. Nice releases were reported on crank baits. Bluegills, perch and crappies were hitting in the shallows on minnow-tipped jigs.

Beaver Creek (Clarion County): Brook McCleary, 11, of Knox landed a 28 1/2-inch, 9 1/2-pound golden rainbow on opening day.

Piney Dam (Clarion County): Good perch and crappie bites were reported. Trout were being landed near the Fish and Boat Commission's Millcreek access area.

Allegheny River (Venango County): Mark Jackson of Emlenton caught a 31 1/3-inch, 11 3/4-pound redhorse sucker near Foxburg.

Oil Creek (Venango County): Good trout fishing is reported, as high muddy water has returned to normal. Grannom caddis had been hatching before conditions changed.

Pymatuning Reservoir (Crawford County): Good perch fishing was reported in recent days.

Lake Wilhelm (Mercer County): The causeway and the log boom at the stumps were yielding nice-size crappies before the cold snap. More recently, largemouth bass were being released.

Shenango County (Mercer County): Anglers were pounding crappies up to 14 inches around most of the lake last weekend.

Crooked Creek, Glade Run lakes (Armstrong County): Crappies were starting to bite on minnow-tipped jigs.

Lake Arthur (Butler County): Slab crappies, including some 1-pounders, were reported over the weekend, although not in large numbers. Releases of largemouth bass, including some 3- and 4-pounders, were reported. A few walleye releases also were reported off the North Shore beach area and near the boat rental.

North Park Lake (Allegheny County): Steve Visomirski of Shaler landed seven golden rainbow trout, 15 to 21 inches, and two rainbows, 19 and 23 inches, in recent days.

Allegheny River: The crappie bite has slowed, but small saugers, walleyes, white bass and the occasional smallmouth were reported.

Monongahela River: An angler reported catching five smallmouth bass, bigger than last year's crop, on dark tubes and grubs at Riverfront Park on the South Side. Walleye were biting near shore after dark. Water was rising yesterday.

Ohio River: Walleyes, saugers, smallmouth bass and hybrid stripers have turned on in recent days.

Montour Run (Allegheny County): Ryan Ireland of Oakdale landed several nice trout, including a 27-inch golden rainbow, on spinners and single eggs.

Peter's Creek (Washington County): Kevin Robison of McKeesport released a 10-pound 1-ounce largemouth bass on a buzz bait, April 18.

Enlow Fork (Washington County): Aaron Toth won the Shad Lure Bait and Tackle April trout contest with a 7-pound rainbow landed April 24.

Meadow Run, Dunbar Creek (Fayette County): Meadow Run was stocked yesterday and was heavily pressured. Dunbar was fishing well on white Wooly Buggers, emerger patterns and Hare's Ear nymphs.

Youghiogheny Reservoir (Fayette County): Good crappie action was reported yesterday.

Yellow Creek Lake (Indiana County): Numbers of northern pike were reported.

Keystone Lake (Indiana County): Crappies and a few muskies were reported in recent weeks.

Wilmore Dam, Hinckston Run Reservoir, Ebensburg Reservoir, Glendale Lake, Colyer Reservoir (Cambria County): Good panfishing was reported. Crappies were hitting at Glendale and Wilmore, bluegills were active at Hinckston and Ebensburg, and anglers caught perch from shore at Colyer.

Curwensville Reservoir (Clearfield County): Crappie and perch were hitting well, with sizes running average. A lot of pickerel are reported this year, along with a few muskies.

Raystown Lake (Huntingdon County): Striped bass were hit or miss -- typical for this time of year -- and smallmouth hadn't turned on yet, either. Anglers were targeting lake trout trolling flutter spoons in 8 to 15 feet, while stripers were hitting in 5 to 15 feet on shad and alewives.

Little Juniata River, Penn's Creek, Spring Creek (Central Pennsylvania): Nymphing and streamer fishing has been excellent in high cold water. Warm weather should trigger the March Brown hatch on Penn's Creek.
