NBA Notebook: Heat's Riley resigns as coach
Hall of Famer hires assistant as successor
Tuesday, April 29, 2008

Pat Riley's worst season as coach of the Miami Heat will be his last.

"I didn't have to look back," Riley said, recalling the final time he walked off the court in the final regular-season game. "I know that's behind me."

Riley, a Hall of Famer, has resigned as coach but remains team president. Assistant coach Erik Spoelstra, 37, will replace Riley on the Heat bench, making him the youngest current coach in the NBA. Miami finished the season with the NBA's poorest record (15-67) and, by far, the worst of Riley's 25-year career.

Magic

Hedo Turkoglu, whose 19 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists per game helped Orlando win its first division title in 12 years, was selected as the NBA's most improved player.

Hornets

Coach Byron Scott, who led New Orleans to its first playoff appearance in four years this season, has been chosen as the NBA coach of the year. Scott is expected to receive the award today before the Hornets play host to the Dallas Mavericks in Game 5 of their first-round Western Conference playoff series. New Orleans leads, 3-1.
