There was nothing supernatural about the water damage that occurred at the Homestead police station last night. It was just ordinary wind and rain that caused some ceiling tiles to come down, said police Chief Jeffrey DeSimone.
The building that houses the police station at Ninth and Amity streets in Homestead has been in the news recently because members of the Greater Pittsburgh Paranormal Society said they found evidence of paranormal activity in the building following a Feb. 23 investigation.
So when reports were made last night about a roof collapse at the building, some folks started jumping to conclusions.
But Chief DeSimone said last night's damage was caused by the storm that passed through the area. He said contractors have been putting a new roof on the building and in a portion where the old roof was torn off and the area was protected by roofing paper, the paper blew off in the wind.
Then, the heavy rain poured into the building, which caused some ceiling tiles in the suspended ceiling to come down.
The chief said the incident had originally been reported as a roof collapse.
"There was no collapse, there were no ghosts involved. It's a water leak, that's it," Chief DeSimone said.'
Officers were kept out of the building over night because the power and phone service was turned off, the chief said. But the roof was covered, the inside of the building cleared and utilities turned back on by 8:20 a.m. today.
The police and support staff are now back in the building, which is owned by Allegheny County.
