Pounds of acorns produced annually per acre by Huntingdon County oak trees after gypsy moth infestation. Before defoliation by the caterpillars, the same oak trees produced 173 pounds of acorns per acre. Acorns are an important basic food source for many woodland animals, and serious reductions in mast production impacts wildlife throughout the food chain.
