Until this year, Helen Turis Lychkoff Cobb walked 3 miles a day. Every Sunday, she attends St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church in McKees Rocks. Though she turned 100 years old earlier this month, she's still meeting new people. And to each one she says, "Glad you met me!"
She was born on April 8, 1908, the third of Michael and Helen Turis' seven children. In 1925, when she was 17, she married John J. Lychkoff and moved with him from Banning, Fayette County, to McKees Rocks. Mr. Lychkoff worked as a lineman for Duquesne Light Co. They had three children: George Lychkoff of Anaheim, Calif., Lorraine, who died as an infant, and Ruth Helenic of Santa Ana, Calif.
Mrs. Lychkoff had many interesting jobs, including one at Dravo during World War II, helping to build LSTs (Landing Ship, Tank) -- huge crafts that delivered tanks and other vehicles during amphibious assaults. She also worked at a bakery and a candy factory. But her main job was as a "dairy girl" for Kroger's. At various stores, she cut and wrapped cheese.
Mr. Lychkoff died in 1950 of a heart attack, after 25 years of marriage. Ray Cobb, whom Mrs. Lychkoff had met while working at Dravo, became her second husband in December 1953. Mr. Cobb, a union painter, worked at Forbes Field, the Duquesne Club and various Eat 'N Park restaurants. After 51 years of marriage, he died in 2005 from lung cancer.
Mrs. Cobb, who has two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, celebrated her birthday at her church on April 6 and with her family at the Duquesne Club on April 8.
Before Joseph F. Bauer Sr. married his sweetheart, he was an Army photographer during World War II, taking pictures in the Philippines and other far-off places. His five children still have albums filled with his wartime photos, but few captions. Now they can add some new pictures -- from his 100th birthday party on Sunday.
He was born on April 24, 1908, in Bloomfield. As a young man, he got a job as a book binder at Carnegie Library. In 1949, he married Marie and they moved to Ross. They had five children: Joe of Mars, Dave of Linden, Calif., Beth of Shaler, Tom of Cambridge, Ohio, and Barb of Ross.
From 1962 to 1993, Mr. Bauer was active in the Perry Athletic Association as a coach, umpire and commissioner. In 1973, he retired from the library after 50 years of service. In 2000, his wife died after 51 years of marriage.
Mr. Bauer still enjoys planting his vegetable garden -- with tomatoes and zucchini -- and attends Mass daily at the Incarnation of the Lord Parish. About 125 people, including old friends from the athletic association, attended his party Sunday at Holy Family in Ross. He has five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
