Locals can't stop Outlaws regular from winning 'Showdown'
Friday, April 18, 2008

Maybe home field isn't always an advantage. Case in point: the World of Outlaws Dirt Late Model "Showdown at Savertown" Tuesday night at Lernerville.

The 50-lap, $10,000-to-win feature was won by Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark. Moyer who started third, took the lead from Shane Clanton on the fifth lap en route to his fourth win in six races this season. Western Pennsylvania favorite Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa., finished third after starting 10th.

Local late model drivers hadn't turned a wheel on a track surface that was improved over the winter with the addition of more than 1,000 tons of clay. Losing a practice day to snow and three nights of Fab Four racing to rain didn't help their cause.

David Hess Jr. of Waterford, Pa., finished in 13th -- the best finish for any local driver in the feature. Hess officially was presented his winnings from the Alltel All Star competition during the Alltel DIRTcar Nationals. Hess also won the B-main to earn the 17th starting spot in the feature.

Other local drivers that made the feature included MACS regular Matt Lux, who finished 15th; Gary Lyle 19th; defending track champion Alex Ferree 21st; David Scott 23rd; and Davey Johnson 25th. Former Lernerville track champion John Flinner of Cranberry returned to action with a new look on the Johnson Racing No. 48. Flinner plans on racing at Lernerville and Pittsburgh's Pa. Motor Speedway.

Legendary owner dies

Morgan Hughes, 88, owner of Williams Grove Speedway outside of Harrisburg, passed away Saturday at home. Known as The Grove, the half-mile dirt track has played host to some of the richest sprint car purses in the mid-state. Hughes purchased the speedway, which began operation in 1939, along with the adjacent Williams Grove Amusement Park in 1971.
