On Saturday nights at the Stockdale fire hall in Washington County, young Romeos only had eyes for perky girls clad in form-fitting dresses or sweaters and skirts and bouffant hair. It was, after all, the age of Aqua Net hair spray. Fifty cents bought admission to the week's biggest social event, which often featured live performances by popular recording stars and, if you were lucky, a few smooches with your sweetie.

All it took to end the Steelers' playoff run was one kick ... and a series of mistakes, always at the wrong time and for the wrong team for Steeler fans.
After fighting back from an 18 point deficit, the Steelers' No. 1-ranked defense failed to hold the lead. Now the off season is here and the words, "next year" can be heard throughout the Steelers Nation.

Included among them was Shaler Area High School's "Grease," which is being performed again tomorrow and Saturday. This presentation includes pictures from the opening night preparation and performance. But there's nothing like live theater, so check it out for yourself, if you can get in, that is. The rush was such that some folks were reportedly turned away at Sunday's matinee.

2006 was a year of unexpected changes for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Despite the departure of running back Jerome Bettis and a scary motorcycle accident involving quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, fans and players alike entered the new season with confidence. They were shocked when the defending champions of Super Bowl XL staggered to a 2-6 start. Then, just as the team remembered how to win, questions began to arise about Coach Bill Cowher's future with the Steelers.

FOOD: Mazza Vineyards became the first Pennsylvania winery to make a commercial ice wine in 1984. It has produced as many as 4,000 bottles and as few as 600. The 2006 yield will be about 1,000 bottles. Bob Mazza said he considers ice wine to be his flagship. But producing it comes at a price -- spending a bone-chilling pre-dawn morning in the fields, harvesting the grapes before they can be thawed by the sun.

He's the youngest player voted to a starting spot since fan balloting began in 1986. Anyone who thinks Pittsburgh might have fallen off the hockey map since the Penguins stopped making the playoffs and Mario Lemieux retired should know that Crosby led all players in online All-Star balloting with 825,783 votes. This presentation looks at the magical season and a half leading to Crosby's newest appearance in the international spotlight.

CITY NEIGHBORHOODS: Pittsburgh's entrance through the Fort Pitt Tunnel might be the Cinderella of first impressions, but more than 13,000 inbound drivers daily are more familiar with one of the ugly stepsisters. Like many highways, Route 51 is a design-free mishmash of malls, strip malls, box stores, auto-service lots, beer stores, tanning salons, roadside bars and disappearing sidewalks, hardly a glass slipper contender. But when it arrives in the city from Whitehall as Saw Mill Run Boulevard, the four-mile stretch to the Liberty Tunnels is so degraded that it could be a parody of blight.

Jan. 7, 2007 ~ The year in pictures
![]() |
|
LIFESTYLE: It was the year that the Pittsburgh Steelers won the Super Bowl; the year baseball's All-Stars came to town; the year a near-fatal motorcycle accident involving one of the Super Bowl Champs had a happy ending. 2006 was also the year that saw sorrow when only one miner emerged alive from the Sago mine disaster in West Virginia. It was the year grieving residents of Nickel Mines, Lancaster County, consoled each other after a gunman entered a nearby Amish schoolhouse and shot 10 girls, five of them fatally. And it was the year the city mourned the untimely passing of a new mayor -- and friend -- named Bob. It was a year of art and science, and music and dance in a city known for football. These are the some of the stories that will remain with us in images from the Post-Gazette.
