Mine worker dies in Indiana County

A worker was killed at the Nolo Mine in Buffington, Indiana County, yesterday when he was struck by a shuttle car at about 11 a.m.

The miner's name and age were not released.

State and federal officials were on the scene to investigate.

The mine, operated by Amfire Mining Co., opened in 2001 and produced 636,918 tons of coal last year. Although there had been 39 injuries at the mine through 2007, yesterday's was its first fatality.

The mine operator was fined $22,000 last year for 32 different safety violations ranging from air quality problems to not completing preshift examinations.
