No people were injured today, but as many as seven cows were killed when two vehicles struck them on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in North Sewickley Township, Beaver County.
State Police said multiple cows wandered onto the Beaver Valley Bridge of the turnpike about 5:46 a.m. during heavy fog. The cows were owned by Edward Pflugh of Beaver Falls.
A tractor-trailer operated by Freelin R. Gauze of Plymouth, Ohio, was traveling westbound in the right lane at the 13.3 mile marker, with a van operated by Roger Rollin, 47, of Pittsburgh, with three other passengers, traveling in the left lane.
Simultaneously, the vehicles plowed through the wayward herd of cows, killing three immediately. Several others had to be euthanized due to "extensive injuries."
Police said no evasive action was possible due to their location on the highway and the fog. All five people in the two vehicles were wearing seat belts at the time of collision. Both vehicles sustained substantial front-end damage.
State police said they expect to file no charges.
