Friday, June 01, 2007

The Post-Gazette reviews movies from a family perspective:

'Gracie'

Rated: PG-13.

Suitable for: Children roughly 7 or 8 and up.

What you should know: Set in 1978 New Jersey, this was inspired by the death of the older brother of actors Elisabeth and Andrew Shue, who both appear in this fictional story. Gracie is a 15-year-old New Jersey teen whose adored older brother, a high school soccer star, dies in an accident. She decides to take up the sport, to the bewilderment or scorn of others.

Language: A handful of mild four-letter words.

Sexual situations and nudity: Teens flirt and make out.

Violence/scary situations: Although the fatal accident isn't shown, we see the police telling Gracie's parents the devastating news. His funeral and the family's lingering grief is shown. Gracie starts to act out and does some foolish things. On the soccer field, she takes some hard hits, including one that bloodies her nose.

Drug or alcohol use: Adults and college students consume beer.
