The Pittsburgh Planning Commission today delayed action for two weeks on Detroit developer Don Barden's plans to build a casino on the city's North Shore while a more detailed traffic study is completed.
The commission said a working group headed by the city's principal traffic planner, Sidney Kaikai, has been meeting with all of the parties concerned about the casino -- the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Pirates and Carnegie Science Center and Mr. Barden's PITG Gaming. He expects to have a more detailed traffic plan ready by the commission's May 15 meeting.
Mr. Barden had urged the commission to approve the master plan for the casino site while traffic concerns were worked out. The facility's neighbors, particularly the Steelers and science center, asked for the delay.
In a related matter, the commission approved plans to demolish two warehouses on the site of the proposed $435 million casino.
