The Post-Gazette reviews movies from a family perspective:
'Next'
Rated: PG-13.
Suitable for: Teens and above.
What you should know: Nicolas Cage plays a Vegas magician who has the ability to see two minutes into the future. He is pressed into service to save Los Angeles from being leveled by a nuclear blast. Julianne Moore plays an FBI agent, and Jessica Biel is a teacher who becomes Cage's love interest.
Language: A character appears to mouth the f-word, and a dozen milder profanities are used.
Sexual situations and nudity: Kisses are exchanged, and a couple are shown in bed, under the sheets, after a night together.
Violence/scary situations: The premise is disturbing and people are kidnapped, shot to death or blown up. The movie briefly shows what a nuclear holocaust might look like.
Drug or alcohol use: Cage orders martinis and a scene is set in a club where drinks are served.
'Year of the Dog'
Rated: PG-13.
Suitable for: Tweens and older.
What you should know: Molly Shannon plays a single woman whose beloved dog dies. Shannon becomes increasingly involved in animal rights and unhinged in this oddball comedy.
Language: Nothing notable.
Sexual situations and nudity: Some kisses, nothing more.
Violence/scary situations: Shannon's dog is lethargic and on the verge of death. There are other scary moments, including a dog bite and (off-camera) an animal attacking another and being euthanized. A Web site has images of monkeys being tortured. Someone attempts an attack on a person but is thwarted.
Drug or alcohol use: Adults drink and one gets very drunk.
