Readers forum: Manly movies

Men rule! At least at the box office. Recently, movies aimed at a mostly male audience seem to be doing better than the so-called chick flick (read article).

If you've seen "300," "Wild Hogs" or "Ghost Rider," here's your chance to write a review. Tell us why you think these movies are so popular and what you thought of them.

Send your review to postscript@post-gazette.com. Include your name and hometown.

300 was created for 16-25 year old males. While it was exciting for someone who does not know the history, it was a farce to ones that do know the history. The Spartans were portrayed as fighting for democracy and the Persians were depicted as perverts. Neither of these portrayals is at all accurate. All in all, this movie is much closer in quality to Rambo than to Rome (a HBO series). -- Peter Pediaditakis, Chapel Hill, N.C.

If you think prostate problems, latent homosexuality and motorcycle gangs that terrorize small American towns are hilarious, then skip a few hours of watching "Demolition Derby" on ESPN 3, and truck yourself on down to your local cinema.

When I saw this film, the house was packed, and the audience's response reminded me of a "Hee Haw" episode laugh track on steroids. The special effects were cheesy, and the script often appeared improvised.

Why men are flocking to this movie is a mystery to me; perhaps, they wanted to find out what Felicity Huffman sees in William H. Macy. It sure isn't what Jack Nicholson showed the audience in the porno theater scene from the "Departed."

Dag nab it! There were a few funny scenes; unfortunately, every time one came along my view was obstructed by male "Baby Boomers" running in front of the screen to take a pee.

Do yourself a favor; go see "Amazing Grace."

I felt "300" was an excellent film that was true to the Frank Miller graphic novel, filmed in his artistic style. Although all of the names, sites and battles were based off of historical context, obvious liberties were taken in the film's interpretation of the facts. For my wife and I, it was very enjoyable to see the Spartans fight the Persians, and to get a visual sense of the epic scale these battles were like. People that would want a fact by fact version will be disappointed, but other wise a great flick for any adult!

I loved 300. It was just as much exciting as I thought it would be. I can't wait until it comes out on DVD. I will definantly purchase it. It shows how men in those days honored themselves and everything around them. It shows the endurance that they were subjected to. You can't beat a film like that with a chick flick. You just can't.

"Wild Hogs "was kind of funny.

"Ghost Rider" was presented with care and staying with the original story line as presented in the original comic book character. Marvel and Stan Lee have shown that you can have a successful movie with comic book characters.
