Monday, July 31, 2006

More than 5,500 Duquesne Light customers were without power last night after a thunderstorm swept through the area dropping nearly two inches of rain yesterday afternoon.

At around 10:45 p.m., spokesman Joseph Vallarian, said power had been restored to more than 34,000 customers. He said crews were working to restore power to the remaining 5,500 customers.

Mr. Vallarian said downed trees and branches affected customers in Brookline, Beltzhoover, Beechview, Banksville, Greenfield, Moon and Dormont.

McArdle Road was closed from the Liberty Bridge up to Mount Washington. Traffic lights were out through Dormont and rocks, dirt and other debris were scattered on the roadway at the intersection of Route 51 and West Liberty Avenue.

The thunderstorm and lightning also caused delays in baggage pickups at Pittsburgh International Airport.

At around 3 p.m., the National Weather Service said a strong thunderstorm moved through the area from the northeast to the southwest, coming from Butler and Lawrence counties into Beaver and Allegheny counties.

Meteorologist Terry Parrish, said one to two inches of rain fell in the region. He said were also reports of 3/4-inch hail in parts of the county. He said there were reports of trees down in Butler and Beaver counties and some flooding in low-lying areas.

Mr. Parrish said there's a slight chance of rain today, but the temperature is expected to reach in excess of 90 degrees.
