The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Newspaper in Education program is a community service offered to teachers of Kindergarten through 12th grade. When ordered in quantities of five or more, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is available to schools at 2 cents per daily newspaper and 4 cents per Sunday newspaper. NIE programs and corresponding curriculum guides provide creative ideas and activities that can be used in the classroom. Students are essentially using the Post-Gazette as a supplementary textbook in math, science, social studies and language arts.
During the 2008-2009 school year, we introduced the electronic edition (e edition) of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette to area classrooms. The e edition is an exact digital replica of the Post-Gazette, so it has every article, photograph and advertisement contained in the printed newspaper. The e edition can be downloaded to mobile phones and e-book readers, projected on smart boards and emailed to students and colleagues. The e edition offers benefits of both print and digital formats, while expanding the uses of the newspaper.
Whether print or e edition, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette brings the real world into the classroom. Teachers use the comics to teach the alphabet, the sports section to teach geography, advertisements to teach math skills – all the while their students are reading!
