The 11-month closure of the Fleming Park Bridge at one end of Neville Island will lead to an extensive shuttle system to get workers and residents on and off the island and to public transportation.
Allegheny County is closing the bridge Monday over the back channel of the Ohio River for an $11 million rehabilitation by Mosites Construction. The project will include sidewalk and expansion dam replacement, steel repairs, painting and a latex overlay on the concrete deck.
The bridge is at the eastern end of the island and provides the primary access to the industrial part of the island. The Neville Island Bridge and Interstate 79 are at the end of the island.
As a result of the bridge project, the Route 21 Coraopolis bus won’t go onto the island. To help residents and workers get on and off the island, the contractor will run a shuttle bus every half-hour in cooperation with the Port Authority.
The shuttle will begin at the Neville Island Bridge at one end of the island and travel down Grand Avenue to the Fleming Park Bridge, stopping at all regular Port Authority stops. Then it will loop around and go back on Grand and into Coraopolis.
Passengers heading inbound can get off the shuttle and catch the Route 21 Coraopolis bus at Fifth and Montour streets. Passengers heading outbound can catch the bus on Route 51 (Fourth Street) and Arch Street.
The shuttle will run from 5 a.m. to midnight on weekdays, 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. on Saturdays and 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. on Sundays.
The bridge is an 804-foot through-truss structure that carries about 8,500 vehicles a day. It opened in 1955.
