A woman died in a house fire Friday night in Washington, according to authorities in Washington County.

Karen Elizabeth Campbell, 75, was found in the home on Central Avenue near the intersection with Poplar Street, according to the Washington Fire Department.

Firefighters responded to the home shortly before 9:30 p.m. and had to fight their way in through intense fire conditions, said Gene Mercer, acting captain for the department.

Ms. Campbell was found on an upper level of the home, Capt. Mercer said. The county coroner’s office said determinations about the cause and manner of her death were pending.

A state police fire marshal was investigating. Responders at the scene included, in addition to the city fire department, firefighters from the Canton, North Strabane and South Strabane fire departments as well as Ambulance and Chair Emergency Medical Services.
