Police: Westmoreland man steals EMS vehicle in Pittsburgh, then crashes

A 24-year-old Westmoreland County man stole a EMS vehicle from Downtown Pittsburgh late Saturday night, then drove 10 miles before crashing into another vehicle in Forest Hills, according to police.

Matthew King, of Smithton, is charged with multiple counts of driving under the influence, theft and reckless endangerment. The incident began just before midnight Saturday when Pittsburgh Bureau of Emergency Medical Services District Chief Jennifer McDermott-Grubb responded to PPG Paints Arena on 5th Avenue for a medical emergency at 11:48 p.m.

She parked her supervisor’s SUV at the scene and went inside the arena, but when she returned two minutes later, the vehicle was gone.

A sharp-eyed bystander had noticed a man acting suspiciously and started recording a video, according to a criminal complaint. That video showed a man walking around the SUV and peering into its windows before opening the driver’s door and driving away, according to a criminal complaint.

Authorities were able to track the vehicle’s location and speed through its GPS system, and followed it remotely through Wilkinsburg and then into Forest Hills, where it stopped at the intersection of Ardmore Blvd. and Marion Street.

Police arrived to find the SUV had crashed into another car, which was pushed into a storefront at 2104 Ardmore Blvd and shattered a front window. The two people in the other car were transported to a hospital; the severity of their injuries was not immediately known.

Mr. King suffered a broken collarbone. He was swaying, had glassy eyes and smelled of alcohol, according to police. He was given medical treatment and then transported to the Allegheny County Jail.
