Mediterra Bakehouse opens its first stand-alone cafe and gourmet food market in Sewickley

Pittsburghers have a new place to buy Mediterra Bakehouse’s signature breads and pastries, along with a sunny space in which to enjoy them with a cup of coffee or as part of a meal.

Mediterra Cafe, the Robinson bakehouse’s first brick-and-mortar store, opened Tuesday on Sewickley’s main drag. In addition to baked goods and a coffee bar featuring Parlor coffee and a variety of iced and hot teas, it will serve breakfast and lunch all day, along with a variety of seafood “conserva” dishes that will be available from 4 to 7 p.m.

Nearly a year in the making, the cafe on Beaver Street was designed by architect Heather Wildman of Wildman Chalmers Design in Troy Hill and features woodworking by Pittsburgh sculptor Dan Peluso.

The breakfast menu ranges in price from $7 for a seasonal fruit bowl and $8 for the quiche of the day to $12 for baked eggs served with stewed tomatoes, cannellini beans and a side of bread. Lunch items include pizza ($5-$6), handcrafted sandwiches ($11-$12), and cheese, mezze and charcuterie boards ($15). There also are gluten-free options and a kids menu.

The cafe also includes a gourmet food market featuring dozens of specialty cheeses, charcuterie, imported olive oils and pastas, and other high-quality hard-to-find food items.

The cafe is at 430 Beaver St., Sewickley. It is open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Info: 412-740-7064.
